Times College, Angel’s Heart in the AHU-18 Basketball Tournament boys’ final

Times College and the hosts have reached the final of the first Angel’s Heart U-18 Basketball Tournament boys’ final.

Times College defeated Jubilant College at the semi-final while the hosts, Angel’s Heart sidelined NeBA ‘A’ on Wednesday to reach the final.

Times vs Jubilant

Both sides had two big centres capable of guarding the low post as well as fighting for rebounds…only difference, the amount of experience. Times College’s Aakash and Manish clearly the ones with more matches under their belt.

It was neck and neck until the third quarter…two sides exchanging lead a couple of times. At the end of third quarter, the score was tied at 30 points a piece.

But by then, Jubilant College big man Diveshwar was on foul trouble. Times College’s strategy targeting Diveshwar to draw foul from him worked like a charm. Diveshwar fell prey to Aakash and Manish’s post attack just the way Times College had planned.

Once Diveshwar was subbed after his fourth foul, the flood gates opened…Jubilant without their big man looked a shadow of themselves unable to stop even small players like Minraj pulling off easy layups.

Aakash gave Times College the lead in the fourth quarter followed by run of two easy lay-ups from Minraj. And Manish added three baskets to build more gap.

Diveshwar was brought back in towards the end but there was nothing Jubilant boys could do to turn things around.

Final score: Times 58-43 Jubilant (13-12, 1-10, 04-08, 29-13).
Highest scorer: Manish KC – 21 points.

Angel’s Heart vs NeBA ‘A’

Once again the experience played a big part. Angel’s Heart featured players who have been in the 10+2 College (Senior Secondary Education) circuit for couple years, including a Nepal under-18 international, Nikesh Magar. While NeBA ‘A’ boys are barely 16 years old.

Angel’s Heart had displayed good defensive descipline prior to this match and they did the job well enough even without pressing as hard as keeping Sujan Limbu (NeBA ‘A’ highest scorer in the semi-final against Prime College), fairly quite.

Nevertheless, the NeBA youngsters held their ground well in the first half….falling behind only in the second half…not by much though. Unfortunately, the youngsters didn’t have enough to turn the tide.

Nikesh Magar once again did the most damage scoring 24 individual points as well as providing plenty of assists as the hosts booked their place in the final.

Final score: Angel’s H 55-46 NeBA ‘A’ (16-15, 10-10, 15-09, 15-12).
Highest scorer: Nikesh Magar – 24 points.

The final between Times and Angel’s Heart is scheduled for Friday, July 21. So is the girls’ final between hosts and Saipal Academy.
Final fixture:

Angels Heart vs Saipal (girls) – 7:00am
Angel’s Heart vs Times (boys) – 9:00am

On the same day, Xavier Int’l defeated NCCS in the last of the girls’ group matches to secure fourth spot in the girls’ category.

Final score: Xavier I 38-17 NCCS (12-02, 05-03, 06-07, 15-05).
Highest scorer: Akriti Magar – 11 points.
