Defending champions, Xavier Int’l College, defeated Pulchowk Engineering College to finish top of Group D at the St. Xavier’s College Basketball Tournament 2017.
Although both teams had already qualified for the quarter-final, they put on a good show. However, Xavier Int’l, featuring couple of players who have represented Nepal at the U-18 level, proved the better of the two on the day.
Xavier Int’l had a bright start going on to lead by a significant margin at the end of the first quarter. Pulchowk made defensive improvements in the second quarter but still they were short of changing the run of play…allowing Xavier Int’l to build on their lead.
Pulchowk finally got their defense right in the third quarter — pressing a lot better. While they also improved in offense they were still guilty of missing simple shots. They closed the gap down to 8 points but should’ve done better. Missing 3 shots in a row (two of them on fast breaks), which they should have scored, proving costly.
Come the fourth quarter, Xavier Int’l found easy way through Pulchowk’s 3-2 defensive lines…quickly taking the margin back to 16 points.
In the end it was a comfortable victory for the champs as they finish the first round of the tournament on top of Group D. Pulchowk settle for a runner up spot.
Binesh Neupane went on to score 23 individual points and won the man of the match prize for his contribution.
Final score: Xavier Int’l 60-45 Pulchowk (23-12, 14-09, 11-17, 12-10).
In the other match scheduled for today, DWIT walkover meant Apex College was awarded 20-0 win. That means Apex finished third in Group D while DWIT has nothing to show for.
