Goldengate Int’l College made it to the semi-final of the women’s KCM Basketball Bash 2017 with the defeat of National Creative Co-educational School (NCCS) Monday.
Just a few days ago, Goldengate was saying they had only assembled six players…..point guard Muna Maharjan assigned with the task. As it turns out she didn’t just assemble a set of twelve but a team that has taken Goldengate to the semis.
And convincing Bina Nakarmi to play despite her commitments outside of basketball was a real coup as she proved pivotal in Goldengate’s win. Bina got off the mark right from start hitting a three pointer and eventually finished the game as highest scorer contributing 17 points.
NCCS effort wasn’t at fault by no means though, despite the result. As usual they played a fine bit of basketball.
Score was neck and neck throughout the match. Two sides exchanged lead a couple of times eventually finishing the game tied at 25 points a piece at the end of the regulation time.
Come the overtime, neither side seem to have the edge as both sides found it difficult to find the basket for quite a bit. Towards the latter half, point guard, Kasmata Niraula, finally gave NCCS the lead with a left handed lay up. Show of confidence considering she hesitated taking a shot when ever she ended up on the left side of the paint.
However, a momentary lapse in defense right after allowed Bina with a open shot on the other side…a three pointer.
The score was once again tied (29-29) with less than 20 seconds on the clock….. the match seemingly heading for another overtime…
NCCS might as well have settled for the added overtime but they gave away a needless foul with just one second remaining on the clock which ultimately sealed their fate as Sadhana Ghising scored one of the free throws to give Goldengate the win.
NCCS had been a bit unlucky in the past tournaments….ending up in tougher groups and ultimately getting knocked out from group phases. This time it was within their grasps to reach the semis. But what a shocker….they crashed out without reaching the knockout phase of the tournament yet again after losing their second match.
Final score: NCCS 29-30 Goldengate (07-08, 05-05, 05-03, 08-09, OT: 04-05)
