KBL 2018: Kirtipur off to a winning start

ANK Kirtipur Basketball Team started their Kwik’s Basketball League (KBL) 2018 campaign with a win over visitors, SDC Himalayan Hounds.

Hounds went ahead in the first five minutes but their overall performance lacked the bite. The reputation they had built up as one of the physically fit teams wasn’t there today. Head coach, Raju Acharya attributed that to not enough warm up but considering the match started 15 minutes later than stated time, they didn’t have much excuse. Kirtipur caught up with them and took the lead….ending first quarter 20-15.

But they didn’t have enough to dominate either. So the scores remained neck and neck for much of the second and third quarter.

Fourth quarter saw the home team pull away a bit opening a lead of 8 points but that didn’t stick for much either. And the Hounds came back to lead. Six second before the final buzzer, Hounds were leading by three points. But Kirtipur guard, Prases Maharjan, made three pointer, which looked like a fluke, to level the game.

Hounds still had three seconds to take the game and they got their chance after Prases committed foul on Norbu Gurung. Fortunately for the home team, Norbu did not convert either of the two free throws. On the other side, however, Suraj Khadgi made his free throws count to give Kirtipur the win.

Apart from the last second free throws, Suraj Khadgi, was in excellent form up front. He scored a total of 21 points for his team as well as getting 5 rebounds and three steals. He was awarded the player of the game prize.

Final score: Kirtipur 84-83 Hounds
