KBL 2018: Bibek, Bikash shine as BMK defeat Budhanilakantha

Bishal Milan Kendra (BMK) earned their third win of the Kwik’s Basketball League (KBL) 2018 campaign defeating Team Budhanilakantha Municipality with a dominant performance.

BMK started with a shadow on the hosts’ point guard…Sandesh Tamang tasked with the responsibility of guarding Biraj Rana at all time…that controlled the hosts’ supply line as well as neutralising the threat Biraj posed. While in the low post area, BMK had the height advantage in Bibek Shrestha. In addition, Budhanilakantha’s 3-point attempts weren’t up to expectation in the first half of the game.

BMK opened up a 14 point lead in the first quarter. BMK shooter, Bikash Gurung, was in top form scoring 12 points in that period. Bibek was already controlling the low post area but when BMK brought in Bimal Jung Karki things got worse for the hosts as the visitors took the margin up to 29 points mid-way through the second quarter.

Hosts upped their game to put a better fight once Sandesh (foul trouble) and Bibek (ankle injury) were subbed. Budhanilakantha reduced the margin down to 25 points at half-time but they couldn’t improve on it in the second half.

Unfortunately for the hosts, the pressure of going behind by big margin was getting to them. Besides, their best player, Biraj Rana, had started to limp a bit. Probably aggravated the injury he picked up in the previous game against South Siders.

Hosts, did improve on their score in the second half but couldn’t do enough to close the gap.

Final score: Budhanilakantha 69-88 BMK (Box score)

Bikash Gurung scored 31 points for the visitors. While, Bibek Shrestha scored 26 points as well as getting 14 rebounds and 6 steals. Bibek received the Player of the Game award for his all round contribution in BMK’s win. Bimal and Sandesh were also in the double digit scoreline.

For the hosts, Utsav Chand and Saugat Deep Singh were in the double digit scoreline, latter also collected 7 rebounds. But for his efforts, all Saugat received was an accidental elbow to his rib cage that left him gasping for breadth….pain bad enough that he couldn’t continue to play in the last few minutes of the game.

Budhanilakantha head coach, Upendra Rawat said that his players didn’t have the energy today. He also said that Biraj’s injury meant he couldn’t play that well.

“We will win our next game”, he added.

BMK head coach, Abhisekh KC said, “We decided to guard their point guard man to man which cut off their supply line. And our inside game was good (again).”

“We also went with two big men”, he said, adding, “Our strategy worked.”
