HISSAN Basketball 2017: Xavier Int’l girls grab title

HISSAN Basketball 2017 Xavier Int'l Girls

Xavier Int’l College girls pulled off a shocker to win the HISSAN Basketball tournament 2017 defeating NASA College in the final.

Poor performance from NASA girls coupled with a greatly improved work and a bit of luck in the second half on their part, Xavier Int’l College girls took down a team with a fairly superior line up (at least the starting five) to become the HISSAN Cup 2017 girls’ champions.

Xavier Int’ girls started off trailing in the first quarter but their work in offense wasn’t wasted as they managed to draw 4 fouls from NASA’s best player, Anisha Basnet who has excellent defensive qualities as well as her scoring abilities.

With Anisha on foul trouble, Xavier’s day became that much easier. There was hope for the girls who endured a heavy defeat from NASA girls only few days ago.

They continued to trail throughout second quarter and few minutes into third quarter the gap had reached 7 points. Even with Anisha on foul trouble, NASA were still in control of the game.

However, things quickly took a turn in Xavier Int’l way when the score was 20-13 — NASA leading.

Nisha Thapa
Nisha Thapa, moments before she fired in the shot that gave Xavier Int’l a lift in the game.

A run of 12 points suddenly put Xavier Int’l in front. Lanky centre, Sumanta Khadka, made it 15-20, followed by Meena’s effort on free throw.

Nisha Thapa came off the bench and hit what looked like a hook shot from the top of the key and somehow got the ball in the basket. Whether it was luck or just her technique… the gave Xavier Int’l a lift in mood as well as getting them closer to leveling the game. And moments later she added another basket from another wild shot to end the third quarter 23-20 — Xavier Int’l leading.

In between Nisha’s lucky streak, Karma Sherpa hit a basket and converted one free throw which gave Xavier Int’l the lead for the first time in the game. And their consistent forward, Roji Napit, took the lead to 25-20 at the start of the fourth quarter.

From that point on Xavier Int’l looked fully in control of the game. NASA defense were all over the place. Although they put on a half-hearted challenge towards the end, there was no way back.

Prior to this game, Xavier Int’l had displayed enough skills in offense but their defense was a question mark with their lanky centres looking out of their depth. And a heavy defeat in the hands of today’s opponents in the group phase could’ve been enough to throw their nerves off the rails.

However, they got their acts together. Xavier Int’l centres were in excellent form… shut the doors very quickly and effectively keeping NASA post attacks at bay. And following any misses they were up there on the rebounds — clean catch most of the time. They also added their fairshare on the scoreboards. Xavier Int’l point guard, Meena Gurung, had an outstanding game as usual while Karma once again topped the scoring chart.

Final score: Xavier Int’l 31-27 NASA (05-07, 04-06, 14-07, 08-07)
Highest scorer: Karma Sherpa – 11 points.
